4.0.1 has arrived

Post by draven »

a thread to discuss 4.0.1 and all the updates and new confusing things we get to learn about now. i know after being logged in for a couple hours, i was still a bit overwhelmed by everything. spam away about whatever you like or dislike about the changes.
one thing i would like to mention since i've seen / heard a number of various comments in guild and out, is that this is the first and messiest step on the way to 85. for those that remember the 3.0.x patch before wrath, everything was just as much of a mess then. with so many changes and updates, there is no way that classes will be balanced any time soon, and i'm sure blizz will be doing a lot of tweaking over the next several months. however, it is unlikely they'll be doing anything major before cata, as they probably don't care nearly as much about the state of the game now as they do about what it will be at 85 in cata, despite the massive amounts of qq they are likely to receive until then.
anywho, hope everyone is enjoying the new stuff :)

New baked in UI features:

New Raid UI: Terrible! Can't resize it small enough, it bugs out, and it has very little functionality or customization.
New built in Power Auras: Works pretty good so far as I can see.
New Glyphing System: Sorta confusing to work out at first but is an improvement. Why on earth they now make you carry yet one more thing in your bag to overwrite glyphs, especially when you can just buy that stuff from a vendor is beyond me.
Reforging: Very good IMO. You can stretch bad gear to it's limit or make an unbalanced high gear set more adjusted.
Mastery: Good for some classes, may as well not be in the game for others.

Since I no longer have to two carry two stacks of devout candles, one stack of dust of disappearance is a savings in my book.

Having lived through 2.0 (hunters thought 1ap per 1agi was going to end everything), 3.0 (WTF, achievements???) and now 4.0 (WTF, everything???) I can safely say this is the most jarring of any patch, ever. It's like Deathwing himself in his quest to destroy Azeroth first took a detour into the WoW source code and blew everything up. Leaving the devs to scrap everything and make a whole new game. That's honestly what it feels like. I don't want to play any of my level 80s because it's so much to take in. I supposed I could play my resto shaman as her entire purpose is to heal. But I may avoid my hunter like the plague until cata when I can level and relearn my class in peace. Having played a hunter for so long I felt I had a good grip on the entirety of that class, now I know nothing. In the little I've played so far here's what I've found:
Things I like

Pally combo points
super massive stable slots
guild ui
guild bank ui
I never have to re-buy glyphs
no more mana for hunters. Mana, in it's current implementation, is an old and out-dated mechanic, I'm glad they're moving away from it.

Things I don't like

moving various tabs at random (like why are my vanity pets in with my spells?, etc.)
I now have to buy every glyph at some point because it might get changed later and be awesome or I might respec
It's not that every talent means more now, there's just less of them, meaning less variety in talent builds. The old 51 point trees were awkward and bloated but now I just feel shoe-horned as far as talents go.

- Don't care for mastery. It looks to me like just another "must have" stat for most classes. It used to be: "Oh, you're not doing enough dps, you need more haste, more crit or more armor pen." Now its "you need more mastery".

- Reforging looks very nice. I like the idea that if I see a piece of gear which is a "meh-grade" I can still take it and make it an "oooo-grade" at the reforger.

- Hunters not having ammo and not needing reagents on a few toons? Very nice.

- Moar pets for hunters? FINALLY!!! Woot woot. I can go get all those pets I couldn't before.

- Raid / Personal Buffs being same spell? Sweet! Free up a lot of action bar space.

- I love the new glyph system, but for the most part there's not a lot of variety/choice. When setting Thandrenn up I found that with maybe 1 exception there was exactly 3 protection-oriented glyphs.

- New talents... some are cool, but I don't like the inflexibility. Thus far I've setup: Prot Warrior, Arcane Mage, Fire Mage, Resto Druid, Holy Paladin. The druid was the worst. I presently have all talents in the Resto tree. There was very few I passed up (PvP related stuff). I understand what they were trying to do but it doesn't feel right still.

- The Guild UI being its own window is kinda weird at first, but I adjusted to the "J" hotkey very quickly and I absolutely love that you can see guildies professions via it. As well as see that I'm presently #1 in Achievements in my Echo Isles guild. By a slim margin - or till someone with higher than me logs in for first time since patch.

- Prot Warrior rage generation feels off. I'm sorely missing my Bloodrage. The Glyph to give Berzerker Rage 5 rage doesn't cut it. I tanked a few heroics last night and for the first time in a while was feeling rage starved and having difficulty holding threat. I'm dubious about working Victory Rush into my pattern, but working Rend in before I thunderclap might fix a bit. Though with crazy dps AoEing before I even get there, that 1 second delay on Thunderclap might be problematic. I remember the transition to patch 3.0 being "zomg, I love what they did to Warriors, def gonna lvl Thandrenn first!". The transition to patch 4.0 has me shifting uncomfortably.

- With as many toons I have (11, with 9 of them having dual spec), getting everything sorted is going to take some time. Even getting just Thandrenn setup was a bit of a headache. Having lived through patch 2.0 and patch 3.0 I do agree this one is has the most changes.

- Overall I think this patch is a good thing, if a bit rushed (the known bugs list is kinda extensive), but I suppose they wanted to get all that stuff out of the way before actual launch.

Daghi: What are you speccing as now? I haven't setup any of my hunters yet, but my co-worker was saying she was having a much easier time with DPS & Focus Regen as BM than as Survival.

After taking a walk on my resto druid through some raids today, I have to say, resto is probably going to be the strongest it has ever been in this game.

I simply, cannot use up mana. All hots automatically crit now and each time they crit they can give you 2% mana back. I'm sure it'll get nerfed but whatever, it's fun for the moment.
Also, it is fun to use lifebloom again, but nourish is now almost worthless due to the increased cast time.
When you pop tree form, regrowth becomes an instant spam spell, giving you it's full heal and hot value and 100% crit on every GCD. I can pop tree form and spam nonstop 12K crit heals every GCD on a tank for 30 seconds. It is the ultimate panic mechanism.

Wild Growth has a longer cooldown, but swiftmend CD has been cut in half and everytime you swiftmend you AOE heal any friendly target within 12 yards of the swiftmend for 60% of the swiftmend. Overall, druid AOE heals just went up a notch, while also become much stronger in "save the tank" situations.
We will have to see if druids are able to aquire enough haste to make nourish useable again @ 85.

On that note some tauren druids had a message for blizz developers over losing tree form.

What I meant to do was go BM for pve and pet collecting and do MM for pvp. However what I actually did was go BM for pet collecting then made a pve survival spec. I haven't tried the SV spec yet but the BM spec felt great, the shots flowed really well, and by flowed I mean I could spam arcane shot pretty well and then steady shot when focus was low, it's really easy, I didn't feel overwhelmed trying to deeps.

PS. Core Hounds are pretty dope now.

honor and justice points are indeed both soft capped at 4k. if you have more than that, you won't earn more.
rumor has it extra points are converted to gold at cata release.
