KTM vs. Omen, who gets aggro?
Apparently there's a new threat meter in town, Omen.Some people have been trying it out and seem to like it better because it updates on a more frequent basis and has min/max possibilities of threat.New add-ons are fun to play with and all, however there have been various reports of Omen users having large discrepancies in threat or not appearing at all on KTM meters, and vice/versa. Possibly because of communication problems between the different mods.For now, the guild standard has been KTM, and until there is a large push to switch the whole guild over to Omen, I would ask the Omen promoters to stick to KTM when we raid to avoid these possible discrepancies.With that said, I'd also like the supporters of Omen to use this post to promote/comment/suggest it. IE: Should we be making the switch over to Omen? Why is it better?Also a question I have, if the update rate is faster, does that mean the mod will use up more CPU?I suppose I'll have to try it for some 5 mans before I can comment on it myself ^^;

As far as I know, Omen is actually friendlier to your cpu than KTM. If I remember correctly, KTM polls (asks) every other client in the raid every so often. So, for every person with KTM in your raid, your computer has to answer these queries from every person. Omen is a bit smarter, and is "aware" of other Omen clients, and sends out updates every so often on it's own.
Anyway, I think the discrepancies come from Omen/KTM interaction, as Omen can pretend to be a KTM client in order to use data from other people in the raid that aren't using Omen.

I have used them both in raids, and I notice omen sort of freak out with focus targets...I just assumed that it doesn't interpret the command to focus when that command is issued from a KTM client, so basically someone would have to set it on Omen as well. That was basically the end of my interaction with Omen.

Omen doesn't have a focus - it immediately switches to give current threat numbers on your target - so if you were switching between targets, you'd see the threat numbers "freak out" and change wildly.
That said, neither threat meter handles identically named mobs, because blizzard provides no unique identifier for mobs, so threat on the two "Gluttonous Fel Hounds" you're fighting just get lumped together into one.

I tried Omen last night and really liked it ...granted it wasn't the best scenario though since I was purely focused on HKM the whole time. We'll see how it goes tonight ...

Are you running Omen along with KTM at the same time? If so, how'd that work out for you?Chuunks wroteI tried Omen last night and really liked it ...granted it wasn't the best scenario though since I was purely focused on HKM the whole time. We'll see how it goes tonight ...

It works fine -- I never noticed a real discrepancy, but I was focused on one target pretty much all night -- and when we were on the trash, I was paying attention to the targets' target to taunt back when they charge. Hopefully I'll give a better report tonight.

We recently mandated a full guild switch to Omen. A few people (like myself) used it beforehand and I really liked it and prodded the others into gradually accepting it. One major upside is that it tracks threat per mob instead of global threat, as Fargol already pointed out. Another benefit is that it is an ace addon, and for those of you who know about ace addons, you know they're built lightweight, efficiently to complete a specific task Ace addons are generally far superior performance-wise to other addons, and theres a good reason for that in the way they're made.Oh, and for the lazy, Omen is 100x easier to update via WowAceUpdater than KTM is. That alone sealed the deal for me. The other reason was that KTM in the past has had certain bugs that actually caused the tank to appear to have less aggro than he really had. In one version Sunder would actually count as negative threat on the meter. I think Omen is more accurate in general.
